Before I began working on Grand Reconnaissance, I spent more than three decades in a variety of professional communications roles across journalism, government, politics and industry, with much of the focus on investor relations and corporate communications. This page briefly describes the highlights from that varied career arch. You can also learn, here, how, on a leisurely stroll in San Francisco, I got hooked on the story of the Pacific Railroad Surveys.
Journalism & Communications Career
I established the Investor Relations and Corporate Communications functions at Imation Corp. after its spin-off from 3M Company in 1996. Prior to Imation, I led the IR function at Cray Research and at Digital Equipment Corp. where I began my IR career. I also taught investor relations courses at the graduate level at Northeastern University in Boston and at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis and frequently spoke on Investor Relations, crisis communications and business ethics. I served as Chairman of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) professional association, chaired the NIRI Ethics Council and was on the editorial board of Investor Relations Quarterly.
After more than 25 years on the firing line in Investor Relations, I began consulting with a variety of organizations and entrepreneurs providing financial communications, investor relations, communications strategy and positioning. I also was a regular contributor for several national and regional publications on a freelance basis where I wrote on a variety of topics in business, finance, personal investing, corporate governance, capital markets, and the economy.
